Mixing and Matching Patterns and Textures in Coastal Interior Design

Do you want to add depth, interest, and a sense of coastal charm to your home? Mixing and matching patterns and textures in coastal interior design can do just that, while creating a visually dynamic space. Here are some of our favorite tips and tricks to help you navigate the world of pattern and texture combinations in coastal design.

Layering Patterns with a Common Color

When it comes to layering patterns, it's important to choose a large-scale pattern and a small pattern with at least one color in common. This creates a cohesive and harmonious look. For example: if you have a large-scale floral print on a sofa, pair it with a smaller geometric or striped patterned rug or throw pillows that incorporate one of the colors from the floral print. This balance lets your eyes appreciate both patterns without clashing–and without the raised eyebrows from your mama!

Striving for Balance

Balance is key in coastal interior design. To achieve that perfect coastal blend of accessible-yet-polished, try to strike a balance between ornate and rustic or natural elements. For example, if you source an ornate vintage frame, balance it out with something rustic, like a reclaimed wood coffee table or a natural jute rug. This combination of fancy and casual elements creates a relaxed yet refined look, a hallmark of the coastal design aesthetic.

Choosing the Right Textures

In coastal design, the choice of textures plays a crucial role because we are about design AND function. If you live in the hot, hot Southern states, opt for materials like rattan, linen, boucle, velvet (which, surprisingly, doesn't hold moisture), and chenille to create a comfortable and inviting coastal ambiance. These textures bring a touch of natural warmth and softness to the space while keeping maintenance to a minimum.

On the other hand, it's best to steer clear of too much wool, leather, and concrete indoors, as they don’t align with the breezy coastal vibe. However, don't hesitate to explore oyster concrete for driveways and outdoor entertaining spaces. Its unique texture adds a touch of coastal whimsy.

Embracing Coastal Colors

Resist the urge to paint every room blue. That is the most overdone trend of coastal living. Instead, embrace the coastal color palette, which often includes soft blues, sandy neutrals, crisp whites, and hints of seaglass green and salmon.

These colors evoke the calming and refreshing feel of the coastal environment. Incorporate these hues in your pattern and texture choices, whether it's through patterned upholstery, coastal-inspired artwork, or textured throw pillows. By using these colors, you'll create a cohesive coastal look that brings the seaside right into your home. If you’re looking to strike a bohemian and eclectic feel, bring in lots of these colors in little touches throughout your home. For a more Zen-like vibe, pick two and use that as your commonality.

Remember to choose patterns with a common color, strive for balance between ornate and rustic elements, and select the right textures like rattan, linen, boucle, velvet, and chenille. Embrace the coastal color palette to further enhance the seaside feel. With these tips, you'll be able to achieve a coastal interior design that is inviting, relaxing, and beautifully layered with patterns and textures. So, dive in and create your own coastal oasis!
